GrabCAD Print Exceptions (Use with Main Workflow)

Use this page only when the slicer is GrabCAD Print. Follow the main workflow unless a step here overrides it.

Purpose

GrabCAD Print behaves differently from Cura/Prusa/Bambu in three critical places: presets, build projects, and how build-time estimates are recorded. This page overrides only those steps. Everything else stays the same.

Applies To

Override 1: Customer Print Settings (GrabCAD Does Not Use Presets)

Why: GrabCAD Print cannot export/import presets the way other slicers do. The customer’s .print project is the carrier of their material + print parameters.

Do this:

  1. Open the customer’s .print project.
  2. If any parts are present, delete them.
  3. Confirm the correct printer + material + settings are still selected.
  4. Save the project as the settings carrier (name it as TEMPLATE.print).

Override 2: Reuse Decision (Library Layouts, Not Library Build Projects)

Why: You cannot copy/paste old GrabCAD build projects and swap presets. You must recreate build projects using the customer’s settings carrier.

Path B (printer already calibrated, although for another material or with different print settings):

  • Use the plate layout reference from the library (how many parts per plate).
  • Recreate the build projects in GrabCAD using the customer settings carrier.
  • Video: See below

Path C (new printer):

  • Decide the plate layout yourself, then record it in CS_Internal/Evidence/Onboarding_Execution_Note.docx so future runs become Path A.
  • Video: See below

Override 3: Build Projects (Create .print Files Per CAD)

Goal: Create one .print build project per calibration/validation CAD file, using the customer’s settings carrier.

Loop (for each CAD file):

  1. Open the settings carrier .print.
  2. Add the CAD file (e.g., STL) for this build project.
  3. Apply the correct duplicate count + arrangement (from layout reference if Path A, or decide yourself if Path B).
  4. Save the build project as its own .print file.
  5. Remove the parts (keep only settings).
  6. Repeat for the next CAD file.

Override 4: Extractor + Build-Time Recording

Why: The extractor is still used, but as a Summary Spreadsheet generator, not as a build-time extractor.

Do this:

  1. Run the extractor on the saved GrabCAD .print build projects.
  2. It generates a Summary Spreadsheet listing part name, material, and quantity.
  3. Sanity check: confirm the material and part counts are correct.
  4. After you slice each project in GrabCAD, enter the build-time estimates into the same Summary Spreadsheet.

Completion Criteria

You are done when:

  • All GrabCAD build projects are saved as .print files using the customer’s settings carrier.
  • The Summary Spreadsheet exists and is ready for build-time entry.
  • Plate layout decisions are recorded so future runs can reuse them.
